Background Plasminogen activator A (PauA) is a Streptococcus uberis protein that functions similarly to proteins within the Staphylokinase/Streptokinase family. Streptococcus uberis is a common cause of infection and inflammatory disease in the bovine udder. Inflammation of breast tissue (mastitis) has been recognized as a serious threat to the welfare of the dairy cow and has a severe economic impact on the dairy industry. S. uberis has been shown to specifically activate bovine and ovine plasminogen and this is mediated by the extracellular protein, plasminogen activator uberis (PauA), which has a molecular mass of around 30 kDa. It has been postulated that activation of plasminogen by PauA may facilitate early bacterial colonization of the lactating gland by promoting the release of nutrients which are likely to be restricted in milk.
