Background The protein encoded by this gene catalyzes the conversion of L-lactate and NAD to pyruvate and NADH in the final step of anaerobic glycolysis. The protein is found predominantly in muscle tissue and belongs to the lactate dehydrogenase family. Mutations in this gene have been linked to exertional myoglobinuria. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. The human genome contains several non-transcribed pseudogenes of this gene.Lactate dehydrogenase is an enzyme present in a wide variety of organisms, including plants and animals. It catalyses the interconversion of pyruvate and lactate with concomitant interconversion of NADH and NAD+. Isoforms of the enzyme include LDH 1 (4H) in the heart, LDH 2 (3H1M) in the reticuloendothelial system, LDH 3 (2H2M) in the lungs, LDH 4 (1H3M) in the kidneys and LDH 5 (4M) in the liver and striated muscle. The M and H subunits are encoded by two different genes.
