Nipah Virus Related Recombinant Proteins
Nipah virus (NiV) is a highly pathogenic zoonotic virus from the Paramyxoviridae family (genus Henipavirus), closely related to Hendra virus. Fruit bats serve as the natural reservoir, with pigs acting as amplifying hosts that can transmit the virus to humans. Spillover occurs through direct contact with infected animals, consumption of contaminated food (such as date palm sap), or in documented cases, human-to- human transmission via close contact or respiratory droplets. The incubation period typically lasts 4–14 days, leading to symptoms like fever, headache, drowsiness, respiratory distress, and severe acute encephalitis. The case fatality rate is alarmingly high, ranging from 40% to 75%, depending on outbreaks and supportive care quality.
As of early 2026, no licensed vaccines or specific antiviral treatments are available for human use. Management relies entirely on intensive supportive care, while promising vaccine candidates, including Oxford's ChAdOx1 NipahB, now in Phase II trials in Bangladesh, and monoclonal antibodies continue in development. Early detection, strict infection control, and outbreak containment remain the cornerstones of prevention, especially amid recent cases like the contained outbreak in West Bengal, India. Research into NiV and Hendra virus is crucial for decoding infection mechanisms, improving diagnostics, and accelerating vaccine progress.
To support these efforts, Bioss has launched a new series of high-quality recombinant protein products tailored to Nipah and Hendra viruses. These rigorously produced and validated proteins offer high purity and excellent biological activity, making them reliable tools for:
- Immunology research
- Antibody screening
- Vaccine evaluation
- Diagnostic reagent development
