| Background | ABCA1 is a membrane-associated ATP-binding cassette transporter involved in cellular lipid homeostasis. It promotes the efflux of cholesterol and phospholipids to apolipoproteins, supporting the formation of nascent high-density lipoproteins (HDLs). ABCA1 preferentially transports phosphatidylcholine and plays an important role in cholesterol removal pathways. Mutations in ABCA1 are associated with Tangier disease and familial HDL deficiency, making it a relevant marker for lipid metabolism, cholesterol transport, cardiovascular research, and related disease studies. |
