| Background | Creatine kinase (CK) is also known as creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and is an enzyme that catalyzes the phosphorylation of creatine. Creatine kinase is a dimer that exists as isoenzymes with greatest activity in muscle (CK-MM), heart (CK-MB), and brain (CK-BB). An additional form of the CK enzyme exists in mitochondria (CK-Mt). The distribution of CK isoenzymes varies between tissues and species. Creatine kinase is found in serum, plasma, and urine and is elevated by muscle necrosis or disease. |
