Nitric Oxide (NO) Content Assay Kit

Overview

This kit estimates nitric oxide content indirectly through a colorimetric measurement of nitrite, an oxidation product of nitric oxide. It does not measure the activity of nitric oxide-producing enzymes or directly detect nitric oxide itself.

Nitric oxide is a signaling molecule distributed throughout nervous, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and urogenital systems. It participates in intercellular and intracellular signal transduction and is studied in many physiological and pathological processes.

Assay principle

Nitric oxide is readily oxidized to nitrite. Under acidic conditions, nitrite forms a diazonium compound with sulfanilamide, which couples with N-naphthylethylenediamine to produce a colored product measured at 550 nm.
