Overview

This kit measures plant total phenol content rather than the activity of phenol-metabolizing enzymes. It assesses the collective colorimetric response to phosphomolybdic-phosphotungstic reagent rather than identifying individual phenolic compounds.

Plant phenolic compounds are widely studied for free-radical-scavenging and antioxidant properties. Total phenol measurement is useful in plant, food, cosmetic, and natural-product research.

Assay principle

Under alkaline conditions, phenolic compounds reduce phosphomolybdic-phosphotungstic reagent to form a blue complex with a characteristic absorbance at 760 nm.
