Overview

This kit measures cellulose content rather than cellulase enzyme activity. Cellulose is quantified after heated acidic hydrolysis and a color-forming reaction; the result reflects cellulose content, not the rate of enzymatic cellulose breakdown.

Cellulose is a glucose-based macromolecular polysaccharide and the principal structural component of plant cell walls. It is also an important dietary fiber and one of the most abundant natural polysaccharides.

Assay principle

Under heated acidic conditions, cellulose is hydrolyzed to glucose and converted to furfural derivatives that form a colored product. Absorbance at 620 nm is used to determine cellulose content.
